Saaremaa is one of Estonia's most popular tourist destinations. Archaeological discoveries indicate that the region has been inhabited for at least 5,000 years. At the beginning of the 20th century, the island had a population of approximately 60,000, of whom 4,000 lived in Kuressaare. This town was officially declared in 1563 by Duke Magnus, brother of the Danish King Frederick II.
The current town center of Kuressaare has been located in its present position since the first half of the 17th century. Previously, it was closer to the castle. The town center, with its small triangular squares, took shape at the end of the 17th century and, thanks to ongoing restoration, is now a true gem. Kuressaare is a small town, ideal for exploring on foot.
The most important site in Kuressaare is the Episcopal Castle. Among the medieval castles of the Baltic countries, it is the best preserved.
